Meet Paramdeep and Nirmal Ghumman, an Indian-Australian winemaking couple who have created something pretty special on the Mornington Peninsula with their vineyard, Nazaaray Estate.
They took a leap of faith and purchased the 50-acres of cattle farmland in the early 90s. While they weren’t entirely sure what they would do with the land and had entertained the idea of olives or fruit trees, they kept returning to wine, spurred on by Paramdeep’s interest in wine that arose after trying French Champagne on a flight from India to Australia!
Thankfully, the land was ideally situated in a wine region, and the pair set about planting Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay vines. Their award-winning wines are featured in fine-dining favourites Attica and Vue de Monde, but the couple remain humble!
Paramdeep and Nirmal are passionate about using sustainable practices, focusing on natural viticulture, hand harvesting and the avoidance of irrigation. “We look after the land as naturally as possible. We prefer sheep to graze the grass down and fertilise the vineyard.” The result is super small batches of delicious handmade wine that reflect the love, dedication and passion that goes into them. The aptly named Nazaaray Estate (or ‘beautiful visions’ in Punjabi) is Mornington Peninsula’s southernmost vineyard. It overlooks beautiful rolling hills, set in amongst trees and wildlife.
They also offer incredible Indian snacks for you to enjoy with your tastings and even have a converted train carriage for you to admire along with the views.
While the last two years has seen a reduction in their yields due to seasonal factors, they’re hoping to produce more grapes next year. With their Chardonnay in short supply, with less than 100 cases produced, when we say get in quick, we mean it!
